What This Means in Plain Language

ALMA stores your personal profile, your name, reminders, and memories, on your device. When you have a conversation, your messages are sent securely to Anthropic (the company that makes the Claude AI) to generate a response. We do not sell your data, we do not use it for advertising, and we do not share it with other companies beyond what is needed to make ALMA work.

1. Who We Are

ALMA (Assisting Livability for Mature Adults) is a caring AI companion app created by Michael Forrest, Poinciana, Florida. ALMA is designed to help seniors maintain independence and manage daily life through voice-first, personalized conversation.

2. Information We Collect

ALMA collects only the information you voluntarily provide during setup and conversation, including:

1. Your first name and personal preferences
2. Names of family members and friends you share
3. Interests, hobbies, and daily habits
4. Reminders for medications, appointments, bills, and wellness activities
5. Mood check-ins and daily habit streaks
6. Conversation history with ALMA

Your personal profile is stored on your device. Your conversation messages are processed by Anthropic’s secure servers to generate responses, as described in Section 4 below.

3. How We Use Your Information

The information you share with ALMA is used solely to:

1. Personalize ALMA’s responses and remember details about your life
2. Send you timely reminders for medications, appointments, and wellness activities
3. Track your daily habit streaks and check-ins
4. Improve the quality and warmth of your conversations with ALMA

We do not use your information for advertising, analytics, or any purpose beyond making ALMA work for you.

4. AI Conversation Processing

ALMA uses the Anthropic Claude AI to power conversations. When you send a message to ALMA, your message — along with relevant context from your profile — is transmitted securely over an encrypted connection to Anthropic’s servers to generate a response. This external processing is required for ALMA to have intelligent, caring conversations with you.

Important things to know:

1. Encryption: All communication between ALMA and Anthropic is encrypted in transit using industry-standard TLS encryption.
2. No selling: Anthropic does not sell your data or use it for advertising.
3. Data handling: Please review Anthropic’s Privacy Policy at anthropic.com/privacy to understand how they handle API data.
4. No ALMA servers: ALMA does not store your conversation content on its own servers; only Anthropic’s systems process the conversation to generate a reply.

We selected Anthropic as our AI partner because of their strong commitment to responsible AI and user privacy.

5. Microphone and Voice Access

ALMA requests access to your device’s microphone to enable voice conversations, the primary way to interact with ALMA. Your voice is converted to text on your device before being transmitted. We do not record or store audio files, and microphone access is only active when you are actively speaking to ALMA.

6. Data Storage and Security

Your personal profile, including preferences, memories, and reminders, is stored in your device’s local storage. Conversation messages are processed externally by Anthropic as described in Section 4. This means:

1. Your profile and reminders stay on your device (except for context sent to Anthropic during a conversation)
2. Clearing your browser or app data will erase ALMA’s memory of you
3. Your profile data is not backed up to any cloud service by ALMA
4. We use encrypted connections for all data transmitted outside your device

We are committed to using reasonable and appropriate security measures to protect the information you share with us.

7. Children’s Privacy

ALMA is designed exclusively for adults aged 55 and older. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under the age of 18. ALMA is not intended for use by children.

8. Third-Party Services

ALMA uses one third-party service to operate:

1. Anthropic Claude API: Powers all AI conversation responses. Governed by Anthropic’s Privacy Policy at anthropic.com/privacy.

We do not use advertising networks, analytics trackers, social media plugins, or any other third-party data services.

9. Your Rights and Control Over Your Data

You have meaningful control over your personal information:

1. Access: Your profile data is visible within the ALMA app at any time in the Memory tab.
2. Delete: Clear your browser or app data to permanently delete all ALMA profile data stored on your device.
3. Correct: Update your information at any time through the app settings.
4. Questions: Contact us at alma@almamyfriend.com with any privacy-related requests or concerns.

California residents may have additional rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), including the right to know what personal information is collected and the right to request deletion.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy as ALMA grows and adds new features. We will notify users of significant changes by updating the “Last Updated” date at the top of this document. Continued use of ALMA after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
